Locke Science Press is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 38, Issue 1 of the Journal of Architectural and Planning Research (JAPR), published in June 2024 and available online at the journal’s website. This issue presents three scholarly contributions that reflect the journal’s continuing commitment to rigorous research at the intersection of architecture, planning, place, and design practice. The first article, “Intangible cultural heritage as a catalyst for sustainable historic preservation and urban regeneration,” examines how intangible cultural heritage—understood as living knowledge, skills, and social practices—can strengthen sustainability outcomes in historic contexts by enhancing the territorial capital of places. Drawing on case studies from Fort Pulaski National Monument in the United States and Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the United Kingdom, the study demonstrates how integrating craft knowledge, vernacular environmental responses, and local industrial linkage can support resilient regeneration while sustaining identity and continuity. The second article, “Building sistemazione abroad: Meanings of home in Veneto migrants’ houses in Brisbane,” investigates how cultural meanings of home are negotiated and materially expressed among Italian migrants from the Veneto region living in Brisbane, Australia, showing that “home” is experienced as both “there” and “here,” shaped by settlement trajectories, labour, family relations, and the culturally resonant concept of sistemazione as a marker of stability and belonging. The third article, “Semantic analysis of websites for architectural design feature extraction,” proposes a method for examining architectural design features through semantic analysis of large volumes of online commentary, using professional discussions from the ABBS forum and public responses to design proposals for the Zhangjiakou Olympic Stadium to demonstrate how web-based text can support systematic evaluation and comparison of design alternatives.
